Carolyn King SWAc

Carolyn trained at The Cass, Chelsea and St. Martins’ Schools.

Graduating in Fine Art, Environmental Design, and Illustration.

She studied etching and sculpture with professional artists in Cornwall and London and these disciplines show fusion with her current practice.

She has taught in AE, FE and HE and has worked and exhibited in both 2 and 3D Including RA., The Mall, RWA (Selected Painters) Newlyn Orion, Museums and abroad (Spain, France and the former Soviet Union (selected residency). Was artist in residence with HMP service and a member of the British Association of modern Mosaic.

She has illustrated for OUP, Transworld, Private clients, museums and hospitals.

Her children’s books The Fish Lizard of Lyme, (Arts Council) Along came a Seagull and About a Bee. written in rhyme and illustrated in the traditional medium of Egg Tempera occasionally call for another dimension in the form of large mosaic sculptures which she makes in her studio in France, giving the reader a tactile experience and another dimension to storytelling!

Evolving through a historical project Carolyn has been treating her oil paintings more and more as sculptures, statements in time, carving them into being, with both knife and brush… sometimes in a series.

Traditional skills and mediums are at the very core of my practice as are sketchbooks, often returning to them for a new perspective on old ideas…

Her past Russian experience and often working in rural France provides balance to her love of coastal subjects.

However, drawing and memory underpins this artist’s work whatever the creative outcome, but the figure always predominates, sometimes interwoven with a serious sense of fun exploring situations, characters and concepts both real and imagined;

Stories of the everyday fill the studio.
