Geoff Shillito SWAc

A former Graphic Designer and advertising Art Director, Geoff is a self-taught fine artist. In 2005 he was elected a member of the Bath Society of Artists, and in February 2020 was elected an Academician of the South West Academy.

Geoff is an award-winning artist with a growing and enthusiastic following, his most recent success being winner of The Brownston Gallery Award for Painting 2019 at the South West Academy.

He exhibits mainly in London and the South West, most notably at The Royal Academy, The Royal West of England Academy, The Royal Society of British Artists, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Holburne Museum, Bath, The Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, and The South West Academy.

The theme of Geoff’s work over the past few years has been the human head, more often than not on a monumental scale. However, Geoff has recently become increasingly interested in narrative at a domestic scale. He is fascinated by the close-up and oblique view, and by the subject’s inner life, often placing the subject confrontationally close. The face seen with such immediacy can be absorbing, fascinating or disquieting.

Geoff’s intention is not only to realise a likeness but also to capture the essence of the sitter, employing his own particular vocabulary, predominantly using layered and incremental brushwork.
