Louis Victory SWAc

I practised for many years as an architect, alongside developing my boyhood passion for photography through architectural images and exhibition work. Over the last 15 years I have fallen in love again with landscape photography (and painting), devoted to the underlying shape of the land, the textures of its surface, and the way light illuminates it in different conditions. My heroes are mostly the photographers and artists of the early-mid 20th century, when realism was merging with abstraction, and I make images which cover the whole of that spectrum.

Unlike many photographers, I am only interested in ‘kit’ and technical tricks where they can contribute to creating an image that matches my feelings when I stop in my tracks, to look in wonderment. But I do believe in commitment to the whole photographic process, so manage my own archival fine art printing, enabling me to realise my artistic intention in a way which a remote laboratory could not.

My ‘method’ is to walk frequently, observe intently, seize images quickly as perspectives and lighting change, but then to spend a lot of time in the studio, like a painter, getting composition, texture and tone right........without Photoshop! Sometimes I find enjoyment in descending into the small details of landscape which shape the whole experience. Much of my work is in black-and-white, which has strong graphic qualities without the tempting distractions of colour, and fits well with my taste for exploring the inherent dramas of landscape.

Living in Devon is a gift for a landscape artist. Many images are made on the outstanding coast of the South Hams, along the beautiful River Dart, and up on wild Dartmoor near my home in Totnes. I also travel widely in the UK and abroad, returning with photographs of very different environments.

I exhibit widely, and my pictures are held in many private collections. I don’t have time at present to run website sales, but some of my work can be seen on Instagram at louisvictoryarts. If you wish to buy a limited edition print, please DM me or email me at victory.images@gmail.com
