Sonia Fynn SWAc

A Junior entrant at age thirteen to Harrow School of Art, Sonia Fynn went on to study Fine Art at Farnham School of Art, graduating in 1966. An accomplished draughtswoman, she went on to employ her skills for many years as an illustrator to the Cambridge, Oxford, London and Associated Examining Boards. In this role she designed and illustrated papers in various European, Asian and African languages for export all over the world.

Her work was also commissioned for a number of publications by Longman and other publishers in the field of education. Painting, however, has always been her passion and, after bringing up two sons, she returned full time to painting.

Working mainly in watercolour and acrylic she developed a painstaking layered technique, more usually associated with traditional painting using oils or tempera. She also completed a number of lithographic prints of her original work that have proved commercially successful. Largely that work consisted of different series of architectural and landscape paintings, based on the different locations of her various homes at any one time, and her extensive travel in Europe and the USA.

Her work has been exhibited widely and she has been able to successfully continue her professional status as an artist from her earliest employment to the present day. In 2007 she was accepted into the South West Academy and now paints from her studio in Chagford in the Dartmoor National Park.

Her current projects include a return to her early painting in oils and a renewed interest in line drawing. While subject matter abounds around her home she loves to work abroad and her latest works reflect a growing desire to showcase her drawing and painting in smaller studies of natural and man made features in the landscape.
